My neighbor has a sea-faring vessel which he parks on the side of his home. A few weeks ago, he received a letter from the city stating he needed to build a new fence to hide said vessel from view of the street. After reluctantly building the fence and driveway, he presented a sassy idea to me that would require my artistic skills. This mural celebrates AAPI history in the Monterey Peninsula, and more specifically, the contributions that Chinese and Chinese Americans have made to the railroad and fishing industries. It includes a young Chinese railroad worker overlooking a set of tracks, weary from the day’s work but remaining optimistic as he envisions the future. The center is a representation of the Point Alones (Pacific Grove) Chinese fishing village, which was “mysteriously” and entirely burnt down on May 16th, 1906. At the bottom right-hand corner is a depiction of Gerry Low-Sabado, who was born in Monterey and was a fifth-generation descendant of one of the original Chinese families to settle in the Monterey area. Gerry was a local activist who dedicated her life to honoring, documenting, and telling the story of the Chinese peoples' history and their contributions to local community. It was truly an honor developing & bringing this important history to life with paint. I’m looking forward to telling more stories!
